13 Life Lessons from the Yoga Mat

I have been practicing yoga off and on for about 15 years. My love of yoga started with Exhale on Oxygen. I would wake up early during the summer months just to practice with Steve Ross. (And I would silently be wishing for The Temptations’ “Ain’t too Proud to Beg” to play during my downward dog.)

Fast forward ..

Two, almost three, years ago, I came across a Yoga with Adriene video on YouTube.. and I’ve been a devoted follower ever since.

Adriene’s Yoga Revolution wrapped up on January 31, and it was an amazing 31 day yoga challenge. As always, it was a joy to get on the mat each day and practice with her. (And I loved the special appearances Benji made.)

Yoga is so much more than fancy poses on Instagram (or Pinterest).. more than just stretching or another fitness/weight-loss fad/solution/program…

Today I thought it would be fun to share some of the important lessons that Yoga Revolution, and my daily yoga practice, have taught me. Many things in life have the capacity to teach something, if we only pause to listen. (In other words.. learning is a life-long journey)

“Learning is not attained by chance. It must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.”
-Abigail Addams

“To live remains an art, which everyone must learn, but no one can teach.”
-Havelock Ellis

“Knowing others is intelligence; Knowing yourself is true wisdom.”
-Tao Te Ching

What Yoga Has Taught Me (Lessons from the Yoga Mat)

-Everything is as it should be.

-You’re in charge. Always.

-Listen to your body.

-Accept what is.

-Every end is a new beginning.

-Work with your body.

-Be impeccable with your word.

-Allow, and be present for yourself.

-Let go of anything that no longer serves you.

-Connect with the breath.

-It’s not that serious.

-Strength and support come from within.

-Find what feels good.

  1. I have always recommended yoga as an option to my patients. Healthy living is NOT just about FOOD and EXERCISE (although they play important roles.) It is about, MIND, BODY and SPIRIT. It requires effort, energy and a commitment to personal TIME. It requires an individual to VALUE their own life. Those willing to follow a lifestyle that leads to personal GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT, usually find PURPOSE and PASSION in life. The benefits of Yoga (on several levels) contributes to this overall sense of well being.

You’re a wise person to have discovered your PASSION. I wish you continued success on your journey.

    • Thank you! 🙂 I completely agree, although I will say it can be a struggle at times. Finding a good balance takes work, but is well worth the effort… Which is why I tell everyone that fitness is a lifestyle and a life long journey.. But it all starts with the mindset – a willingness to change, some patience, and a sense of humor.
